Transportation Projects
Overview
Per the 2018 Comprehensive Plan, New Garden Township recognized the need to provide a safe and efficient multimodal transportation network that supports the movement of people and goods, promotes economic and community development, and preserves the character of the Township, with the following primary objectives:
- Improve safety, operations, and multimodal access at priority intersections.
- Develop gateway enhancements, traffic calming, and other streetscape features to improve the appearance along key corridors, including Route 41, Baltimore Pike, and Newark Road.
- Plan for new roadway connections to relieve congestion and expand access.
- Leverage key existing transportation assets, including the US 1 Interchange at Newark Road and the New Garden Flying Field.
- Expand facilities and connections for walking, biking, riding transit, and ride-sharing.
- Enhance existing bus stop facilities along Baltimore Pike and plan for future public transportation services to Wilmington, Delaware.
- Maintain Township-owned transportation infrastructure, including roads, bridges, traffic signals, and the New Garden Flying Field.
- Support safe conditions for motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians by reducing and/or calming vehicular speeds and cut-through traffic.
- Ensure Township ordinances and policies for the planning and design of transportation infrastructure are aligned with the Township’s goals, as well as other applicable standards.
- Seek funding from traditional and non-traditional sources for transportation capital improvement projects.
- Enhance and protect the aesthetic and scenic quality of local roads.
- Support and participate in regional transportation plans and projects.
Projects
The Township is focusing on sustainable growth initiatives along the identified primary corridors (most of which are state-owned), which will require a significant investment of funding from PennDOT, developers, and grant funding, to mitigate the cost burden for the local tax base, which is better suited to fund road improvements along Township-owned roadways such as paving and bridge repairs, stormwater culvert replacements, and street sign/light enhancements.
Growth Corridors
- Route 41
- Baltimore Pike
- Newark Rd (US Route 1 Interchange to Starr Rd)
- Route 7 (Limestone Rd)
The following projects have been identified as foundational to addressing existing roadway issues along the Township’s growth corridors, with many more to come as the opportunities arise to continue improving traffic safety and operations in the community:
